I'm not a huge fan of basics. Basics are boring. =P However, it's difficult to build a balanced outfit without incorporating some basics. Neutral-colored pieces in classic shapes are what form the core of your wardrobe. The plain pieces allow the more unique items to pop. And they make it way easier (at least for me) to pull on something in the morning and go, with minimal fussing and throwing outfits on and off. So without further ado, here is my list of basic pieces that every woman should own:
• A Good-Fitting Bra and Underwear
It's important to start with a good base. A supportive bra and a pair of underwear that doesn't give you muffin-top or panty lines will give you the best shape possible. This can make a huge difference in the way that clothes look on you, so don't overlook this important part of your outfit!
• Bootcut Jeans
This is a classic cut of jean that is easy to dress up or down. Wear with a t-shirt for every day, or pair with a sexy top for cocktails.
• White Button-Down Shirt
Can be worn alone for work or a more formal occasion, or can be thrown over a t-shirt to add polish to a grungy outfit.
• Blazer
Wear with a collared shirt for professional purposes, or layer over a casual top for an urban hipster vibe.
• Black and/or White Cardigan
Cardigans can instantly pull together an outfit, and complement a variety of styles.
• Black Leggings
Can be worn under skirts or shorts to maximize coverage or just to stay warm. =]
• Black and White Camisoles and/or Ribbed Tanks
Wear these under any kind of shirt to cover up low cleavage, add layers for interest (or warmth, depending on where you live), or when you don’t have anything else to wear under a sweater or top.
• Denim Jacket
Can look classic, or lend a bit of an edge, depending on the ensemble you add it to. Either way, this layer is great for cool weather and durable enough to last a long time.
• Denim Miniskirt
For when you don’t want to wear jeans.
• Black Heels
A must-have for work or nighttime.
• White Sneakers
A classic sneaker, like converse, is comfortable and stylish – great for when you need to be on your feet. And of course, white goes with everything.
• Black Pants
Goes with everything for work or dressy occasions.
• Neutral Trench Coat
A light jacket that is appropriate for spring and fall, goes with any color palette, and never goes out of style!
• Skinny Jeans
Depending on your body shape, it may take some time to find a pair that fits well, but these can be tucked into boots, or provide a slim silhouette with other shoes as well. They’re a very versatile cut.
• Little Black Dress
Can be dressed up for dinners or events of varying fanciness, or (depending on the dress) layered with other items for a casual and hip look.
• Body Confidence
Guys seriously, no item of clothing will look good on you if you don’t have the confidence to wear it. Eat a healthy diet, exercise, and feel good about yourself and your body image. Clothes look so much better on you when you have good posture and a healthy dose of self-esteem.

So that wraps up my list of basics! Next time we’ll start putting together outfits.
